FORM UKBlues Awards 2019 – Categories

This year the UKBlues Federation has sought to learn from the experiences of the first Awards process and have changed some categories, dropped some and added some new ones. The end result is that there are 20 categories this year, an increase of 3 over last year.

There is a strong desire that the Awards reach out to cover a much wider spectrum of artists/acts/people than in the first awards and in previous award schemes we attempt to embrace those who do not win the recognition they may deserve.

This year, as an experiment, we are asking that nominators do not nominate the same artist/act/people in more than one category except as detailed in the notes below.

Wherever used, the term ‘the Awards year’ shall mean the period 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2018 inclusive.

FORM UKBlues Awards 2019 Categories:

 

Female Blues Artist of the Year

– A female blues artist who, during the Awards year, has made the most significant impact through the quality of their performance and/or recordings.

Male Blues Artist of the Year

– A male blues artist who, during the Awards year, has made the most significant impact through the quality of their performance and/or recordings.

Blues Instrumentalist of the Year 

– A blues musician who, during the Awards year, has made the most significant impact through the quality of their performance and/or recordings.

Emerging Artist of the Year

– A blues artist(e) – vocalist or instrumentalist, for whom this year has seen a significant raising of their profile, experience and presence on the UK blues scene.

Blues Band of the Year

– A band that, during the Awards year, has made the most significant impact through the quality of their performance and/or recordings.

Acoustic Blues Act of the Year

– An acoustic act that, during the Awards year, has made the most significant impact through the quality of their performance and/or recordings.

Young Blues Artist of the Year

– An artist aged under 25 on the 31st December of the Awards year who, during the Awards year, has made the most significant impact through the quality of their performance and/or recordings. 

Blues Album of the Year

– A blues based album by a UK band/artist(e) first released during the Awards year.

Blues Songwriter of the Year

– The person(s) who, in the opinion of the nominating panel, has/have written and/or published the most original, creative and artistic song/songs during the Awards year.

Blues Club/Venue of the Year

 The UK venue/club presenting and promoting regular (at least monthly, preferably more frequently) blues gigs.

The Under the Radar Award

– A blues musician or band that does not enjoy the profile or recognition that he, she or they deserve.

Blues ‘Unsung Hero’ Award 

– Recognising those who work tirelessly behind the scenes and out of the spotlight, promoting, encouraging, supporting, facilitating and nurturing the blues in the UK

Lifetime Contribution to the Blues in the UK

– A person or group whom the nominating panel deems to have made a significant and lasting contribution to blues in the UK over many years. This award is not necessarily limited to musicians but can include anybody who meets the criteria regardless of their particular involvement in the genre.

Innovation in the Blues in the UK

– A person or persons, a band, an organisation or other entity, whose work and/or activities have, in the opinion of the nominators, breathed new life into the blues, introduced something new and fresh and/or successfully pushed the genre’s boundaries in the UK.

Blues Based Festival of the Year

– the UK Festival which, in the Awards year, best catered for the attendees and participating musicians, brought the most to the local/regional community, was well organised and priced and offered the broadest based choice of blues based acts.

UK Blues Based Broadcaster of the Year

– A person or persons who produce/present regular (at least once per calendar month) blues based radio shows, podcasts and the like which emanate from the UK.

RegionalBlues Act of the Year – England

– An artist, act or band, based in England that best represents Blues in England

Regional: Blues Act of the Year – Northern Ireland

– An artist, act or band, based in Northern Ireland that best represents Blues in Northern Ireland

Regional: Blues Act of the Year – Scotland

– An artist, act or band, based in Scotland that best represents Blues in Scotland

Regional: Blues Act of the Year – Wales

– An artist, act or band, based in Wales that best represents Blues in Wales
